The mid-size SUV space in the Indian market is a hot pie. It involves some serious competition, with almost every automaker participating in an attempt to grab the biggest share. However, Hyundai has managed to make the most out of it with the Creta. Of course, the Hyundai Creta continues to rule the roost with its capable powertrain options, and multiple gearbox choices. And lastly, the gangling feature list. Now, the South Korean brand is preparing the CNG-fied iteration of the Hyundai Creta, a test mule of which is snapped recently. The example was seen with “On Test By ARAI.” Hence, it is safe to assume that the Hyundai Creta CNG is in its final leg of homologation.
Why CNG? With diesel engines taking the route to extinction, consumers and automakers are now forced to move to other fuel and powertrain sources to reduce running costs. While strong hybrid powertrains are expensive, CNG is a respectable substitute. Since Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have announced plans to launch the CNG variants of the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, respectively, Hyundai is not ready to miss the opportunity.
The Hyundai Creta CNG in all likelihood, will be sold with the 1.4L turbo-petrol motor that puts out a peak power output of 140 PS and 242 Nm of max torque with petrol as fuel. With CNG, these numbers would certainly drop down by a fair margin. Moreover, the factory-fitted CNG kit is expected to be offered in lower trims only. Earlier, other Hyundai models, namely Venue and Alcazar, were also seen on test with CNG kit onboard. Similarly, Hyundai’s sister concern – Kia, is also testing CNG-fitted examples of the Carens and Seltos.
If Hyundai is going the Maruti Suzuki way, it remains to be seen in the near future, as the Hyundai Creta CNG will make its market debut at the 2023 Auto Expo. A slight premium will be charged over the regular petrol trims for the added factory-fitted CNG kit. However, the additional cost will bring down the running cost. Once launched, the Hyundai Creta CNG will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara S-CNG and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder CNG.
