MG India recently announced the launch of its upcoming compact EV in the Indian market. To be called the Comet, this new electric car will be the smallest car in the brand’s line-up and is based on the Wuling Air EV. For those wondering, the Air EV is sold in markets like Indonesia. While the brand will be launching the new Comet EV in India soon, the deliveries will start somewhere in mid-2023. Once launched, the new Comet EV will challenge the cars like the Tiago EV in India and will boast a range of over 300 km on a single charge. Having said this, here are all the details you need to know about the new MG Comet EV in India.
MG Comet EV India Launch Soon
The new MG Comet EV was officially revealed by the brand in India ahead of the official launch. The brand says that the name takes inspiration from the same iconic 1934 British aeroplane that took part in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race. It is not for the first time that MG used a name for a car that was derived from an aeroplane name. For those wondering, the MG Hector and the MG Gloster are also named after the British airplanes that were famous in the World War II-era.

The MG Comet EV will boast a three-door layout and will measure just 2.9 metres in length, making it the smallest four-wheeler on sale in the Indian market. The EV is based on skateboard architecture and has a wheelbase of 2010 mm. The boxy shape and quirky exterior styling elements give it a unique road presence. From what we know so far, the new MG Comet EV will be offered in attractive pastel dual-tone exterior colour options. Needless to say, it will feature LED lighting elements including a wraparound LED DRL under the windscreen that ends in the wing mirrors.

Inside, it will boast a feature-rich and premium cabin with a four-seater layout. For starters, the MG Comet EV will get a dual-screen infotainment set-up comprising of two 10.25-inch screens, connected car tech, dual-tone interiors with quality materials, voice commands, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a sunroof, and many other premium features like auto-dimming IRVMs and automatic headlights. Multiple online reports suggest that the new MG Comet EV price in India will start from rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base variant. More details however are yet to be known.

Powering the new Comet EV will be a 20-25 kWh battery pack which has been locally sourced from Tata Auto Comp. As mentioned before, this new EV is likely to boast a real-life range of around 300 km on a single charge. It will be powered by a single-motor setup which will be mounted on the front axle and will have a claimed power output of around 50 kW.
Commenting about the launch of the new Comet EV, Mr. Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director, MG Motor India said “Urban mobility is at a point of inflexion where New Age solutions are needed to address both the current as well the forthcoming challenges. As we move further into the digital age, we will witness an exceedingly large number of innovations that could range from futuristic technologies to unique designs to clean mobility and many others. We at MG, through ‘Comet’, intend to take the needed decisive steps and a ‘leap of faith’ in the direction of creating solutions for a better future for each one of us.”

The new Comet EV will launch in the country in the next few weeks and will take on the rivals like the Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3. For a quick comparison, the new Tiago EV is priced from Rs 8.69 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi) while the Citroen 3C3 on the other hand is priced from Rs 11.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Comet EV will be priced from under Rs 10 lakh and will have over 60 per cent localisation to help the brand position it competitively in the market. The Comet EV will be the second electric car in the brand’s portfolio for the Indian market.
