The Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways (MoRTH) introduced a new number series named ‘BH,’ or the Bharat series. The existing rule requires private cars to pay road tax for fifteen years, but the Bharat series requires just two years, after which the owner can migrate to another state and pay the tax for the new state.
What exactly is BH Series Number Plates?
The Bharat Series is a freshly launched numbering series that will be used for car registration across the country, particularly for automobiles that regularly move from one state to another owing to their owner’s transferable work or any other cause. The “BH” in the number plate will represent the name Bharat and replace state-specific alphabets like DL, UP, PB, etc.

Who is eligible for the BH Number plates?
ACCORDING TO MINISTRY SOURCES, the BH number series is now exclusively available to private car owners. Furthermore, registration under the ‘BH’ series will be restricted to central/state government workers, central/state PSU employees, defence personnel, and private sector organizations/companies having offices in five or more states/UTs.
Vehicles with BH numbers are taxed differently.
While a standard car must pay road tax for 15 years, vehicles registered under the BH series must pay road tax for only two years. Owners can relocate to another state and pay the necessary tax as per state regulation.
The Benefits of the BH Series Number Plates
Citizens will profit much from this BH series. State relocation is quite widespread among both state government and private company personnel. This typical procedure involves the transfer of automobiles from one registration state to another. This transfer is required by Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, which specifies that the individual may maintain the vehicle in any state other than the one in which it is registered for 12 months. Furthermore, within 12 months, fresh registration must be submitted with the new state registration authority.
The BH series number plate will now be free from motor vehicle tax for two years. This planned rollout will make car mobility among states more seamless and free. The transfer of ownership of secondhand automobiles was also a major issue if the car was registered in another state and the buyer was from another state. However, with the implementation of the new BH series, the vehicle tax will be collected in multiple two years, allowing unrestricted movement of private automobiles from one state to another in circumstances of relocation. How Do I Apply For A BH Series Number Plates?
The first step in registering for the BH series is to apply for a new plate at the vehicle’s original registration RTO or through the Vahan site and supply a working government ID to establish employment. Furthermore, the owner must pay two years of road tax, or multiples of two, depending on the length of stay in the state where the automobile was acquired.
Previously, obtaining a NOC from the original state was necessary to transfer registration to another state; however, with the BH series, no such NOC is required to submit for new registration; hence, re-registration may be filed immediately.
The new state’s tax will apply, and the owner can wait for the period to expire before registering for a new vehicle. If the owner is detected by the traffic police and cannot renew the RC within the time frame specified by the MV Act, they will be fined. Finally, the owner can request reimbursement from the former state. The refund can be filed if the owner is prepared to pay the tax for the new state and there is still time remaining from the prior state.
