Ford is collaborating with VW group and is working on a number of new offerings for the market including a new electric SUV
It’s no secret to anyone that Volkswagen and Ford are working together on a number of new products that will soon be launched in the market as part of this new JV. To start with, Ford recently shared its plan to launch a new electric crossover which will be based on the VW MEB and will replace the Ford Fiesta hatchback in Europe. Furthermore, this new EV is likely to share most of its critical mechanical parts with the VW ID 4 and will make its debut somewhere in 2023. More details however are yet to be shared by the brand in the country.
Ford VW MEB-Based EV Teased
To start with, this new crossover will be the first car to be based on the VW MEB platform and is likely to be produced at Ford Electrification Centre in Cologne. The brand earlier also shared its plan to launch only one product based on this new MEB platform but is also likely to launch a couple of new cars underpinned by the same platform.

Speaking about this development, Stuart Rowley, Chair of Ford of Europe said – “Our strategic alliance with Volkswagen is an important element of Ford’s commitment to offering an all-electric range of vehicles that are uniquely Ford and designed to meet the mobility needs of a modern Europe that is leading the fight against climate change.”

While we only see a small part of the car in these teaser images, it does give us an idea about the overall design language. Multiple reports suggest that this new electric crossover will feature a design inspired by the new Ford cars like the Bronco and the F-150. It will also get aero-optimised wheels, a contrasting lower bumper and chunky headlights. This new EV crossover is likely to be as big as the cars like the Toyota BZ4X, Nissan Ariya, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge. More detail about the car however are yet to be shared by the brand.

On the features front, this new Ford electric car is likely to be offered with a large sunroof, dual-screen setup with a touchscreen infotainment system and instrument console, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, cooled storage console, push-button start, wireless charge, power-operated seats, power-operated side mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and more. It is also likely to get a long list of safety features including ADAS which gets features like autonomous braking, active cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and more.

In the Indian market, Ford is expected to launch the new Mustang Mach-E electric SUV sometime in future but is yet to comment on the official launch timeline of the vehicle. Having said this, Mahindra and VW are also said to be working together on multiple new vehicles based on VW MEB modular electric car platform including the upcoming born electric vehicles.
