SUVs are getting extremely popular in the Indian market and more than 40 per cent of the total passenger vehicle sales come from SUVs every month. A number of brands are expanding and updating their SUV portfolios in the country at regular intervals. Despite a long list of SUVs on sale in India, only a few of the SUVs contribute to the maximum sales and demand in the country. Mahindra Thar

The new Mahindra Thar was launched in the country in 2020 and continues to be one of the most popular SUVs in the country. The Thar is offered in multiple versions and with multiple powertrain options which include a 2.2L diesel, 2.0L turbo petrol, and a 1.5L diesel engine. While the first two engines are offered with 4WD options as standard, the 1.5L diesel on the other hand can be had only with a RWD setup with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Likewise, the 2.2L diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol can be had with both manual as well as automatic gearbox options. In addition to this, the Thar is also offered with a long list of features including a semi-digital instrument console, a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, central locking, and more. The Thar in the Indian market is one of the strongest rivals to SUVs like the Force Gurkha and the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The Mahindra Thar has over 16-18 months of waiting period depending on the variant you opt for. For those wondering, a total of 4410 units of the Thar were sold in the country in January 2023.

Toyota Hyryder

The Toyota Hyryder is the first premium mid-size SUV in the brand’s line-up and is also the first strong hybrid SUV in the segment. The SUV currently has up to a 12-18 month waiting period in the country depending on the variant you opt for and the city you reside in the country. The new Toyota Hyryder is one of the most feature-rich and fuel-efficient SUVs in the country and is offered with a long list of features like a sunroof, digital instrument console, automatic climate console, wireless charged, cooled storage console, push-button start, auto-dimming IRVMs, and more. The SUV is offered with two engine options – 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L Atkinson cycle strong hybrid petrol engine. The first engine is offered with both manual as well as automatic gearbox options and can be had with FWD and AWD setup. The strong hybrid engine on the other hand is only offered with e-CVT gearbox option. Despite an extremely heavy demand, only 3307 units of the SUV were sold in the country due to a low production capacity. The brand will soon be upgrading the manufacturing facility in the country to meet the demand for its new products.

Maruti Grand Vitara

The new Grand Vitara shares its powertrain options and architecture with the Toyota Hyryder and is one of the strongest rivals to the SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Tiagun, Skoda Kushaq, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Just like the Hyryder, the new Grand Vitara is also offered with two engine options – 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L Atkinson Cycle strong hybrid engine. The Grand Vitara has a waiting period of between 7-9 months depending on the variant and powertrain option you opt for. The AWD version however has a significantly low demand in the country. If you are still wanting to know, a total of 9183 units of the Maruti Grand Vitara were sold in the country in February 2023.

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Mahindra Scorpio N was one of the most talked about launches in the country last year and not only offers a good looking package, but also boasts powerful engine options and a capable setup. The new Scorpio N is also one of the most affordable ladder-on-frame SUVs in the country and is offered with RWD as well as 4WD setup. On the features front, the new Scorpio N is offered with a sunroof, digital instrument console, automatic climate console, push-button start, connected car tech, powered front seat adjustment, touchscreen infotainment system, and more. If you are planning to soon buy a new Scorpio N, you will have to face a waiting period of around 18 months. The diesel versions have a significantly higher demand than the petrol versions and the brand sold a total of 6950 units of the Scorpio N in February 2023.

Mahindra XUV700

The new XUV700 was first launched in the country a couple of years ago and is one of the strongest rivals to the cars like MG Hector, Tata Harrier, and more. It will be offered with two engine options – 2.0L petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel. Both these engines will be offered with both manual as well as automatic gearbox options. Just like the Scorpio N, the new XUV700 is also offered with a long list of features and equipment for the buyers. While the brand sold 4505 units in February 2023, there is a waiting period of up to 14 months and the XUV700 remains one of the highest in demand SUVs in India.
